The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal is for experienced yachtsmen who have theoretical knowledge tp RYA Yachtmaster SBC, practical ability to RYA Coastal Skipper and can demonstrate a knowledge of navigation, meteorology, collision regulations, safety and passage planning up to RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster shore based standard.

This preparation course is designed for those who wish to take the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Coastal exam. The course gives potential candidates the opportunity to thoroughly revise both practical and theoretical subjects. You will spend five days onboard the yacht with one of our fully qualified professional RYA Yachtmaster instructors prior to taking the examination.


30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours, Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s Certificate or Short Range Certificate and RYA First Aid Certificate.

(If you hold the Coastal Skipper Completion certificate this can be reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles) 


5 days + 2 days exam


A GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate such as the RYA Short Range Certificate or higher.
An RYA First Aid Certificate or another valid first aid certificate.
RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course completion certificate (ONLY IF claiming reduced sea time detailed above)



Please note that exam costs are paid directly to the examiner and are not part of the course fee. Therefore you will only pay for the exam if you are ready. Current fee is £224 for Coastal Yachtmaster. This does change and we will advise you of the exact fee at the time of booking.

Course Content

Sailing will be in local waters and and includes, but is not limited to: 
Passage planning
Skippering techniques 
Man-overboard recovery
Close quarters boat handling and pilotage in restricted visibility. 
NOTE – A thorough knowledge of the IRPCS Collision Regulations particularly in relation to lights, shapes and signals is recommended. 
This is very much a skills based course to find out what the student lacks in terms of skill and to concentrate on perfecting all the skills and drills needed for the exam.
All of our courses have a maximum number of three candidates on board so as to ensure that a high level of support and tuition is received.
Our courses also include moorings, fuel, catering including the first evening plus the loan of foul weather gear.
Ability after the course:
You will also be able to skipper a cruising yacht on passages up to 60 miles from port. The RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal.
